It took a couple of games but Red Sox manager Alex Cora finally decided to put his best lineup on the field Monday night – and it paid obvious dividends.
Brock Holt and Rafael Devers were two of the team’s top hitters during the final month of the season but neither started until Game Three. Holt had the first post season cycle ever Monday night! Devers had a couple of hits and an RBI. Both played flawlessly in the field.
It was especially baffling that neither played in Game Two against right-hander Masahiro Tanaka. Lefty C.C Sabathia will start Game Four for the Yankees so once again all bets are off.
The starting of David Price in Game Two proved to be a disaster but it will probably expedite Price’s departure from Boston even if the Red Sox have to eat a ton of money. They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again.
One hopes that after Saturday’s performance Price’s only role for the remainder of the playoffs will be in a blowout situation, making the 217-Million Dollar Man THE most expensive mop up guy in baseball history. You can look it up.
